Davis and Coltrane are working here on a live date from Copenhagen in March of 1960 -- playing on 3 long tunes that really let both players open up and unfold in their own unique solo explorations. Titles are all familiar ones from the Davis book -- "So What", "All Blues", and "On Green Dolphin Street" -- but the extended renditions offer more than a few surprises that make them well worth having. Plus, added to these is one more additional track from 1963 -- featuring George Coleman on tenor instead of Coltrane, plus Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams -- playing "Milestones" on a live date in Juan-les-Pins.

Besides an astonishing mix of various styles and instruments, this show is a good proof that even Chicago based Blues music, isn´t necessarily mostly sad and full of sorrow!

McLean teams up with the fiery young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Pete La Roca for diverse originals by the leader, Drew, and Hubbard that all have the feeling (if not always the exact structure) of the blues. The variety of tempos, moods, and styles makes this a highly recommended set. Trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard adds fire to the proceedings, as does the nimble pianist Kenny Drew. "Torchin'" is the quintessential blues here, given its groovy, down-home flavor. However, it is the upbeat title track that adds just the right spice to this classic Blue Note release. Lateef and his group were playing in Detroit at the time, and they would drive into NY, record a slew of sides (sometimes for competing labels), and then hightail it back to Detroit again. He wasn't offered a club appearance in NYC until 1959. Yusef was pretty much a mainstream modern player when these recordings were made, though occasionally he would try something "experimental" (usually involving an incorporation of ethnic music into his program). Flute was his only other axe besides his tenor, and he plays it once here, on METAPHOR. Better is his tenor work - for example, on the medium blues YUSEF'S MOOD. Lateef is an excellent blues player, sticking to the lower register to great effect. MORNING and THE BEGINNING both are based on repeated ! one-note patterns, with the latter piece being slightly better. Curtis Fuller is on trombone and brings with him his characteristic muddy tone. Hugh Lawson is excellent on piano.
