"It's been a while since I listened intensely to Zorn--used to listen a lot to albums like _Spillane_ but have been less excited by them than before. However, I just dug out _Spy Vs Spy_ again, & think it remains a fine disc. Thrashy, ultra-loud, ultra-fast versions of Ornette Coleman tunes...sounds like it should be a travesty, but it actually works phenomenally well. The album is split into two halves (the original A and B sides): the first consists of the bluntest & fastest renditions of tunes, each about one to two minutes in length. A highlight is "Chippie"--if you listen carefully at the end of the cut after the smoke clears you can hear someone breathe a sigh of relief! It's intense & funny--Joey Baron & Michael Vatcher pounding away, Mark Dresser calmly doing his thing, Tim Berne & John Zorn squalling madly. Part two (side B) has more varied & considered interpretations (some as long as 5 minutes), which often move farther from the source material. I reco! mmend "Ecars", a terrifically swinging rendition of a tune Ornette recorded for _Ornette on Tenor_; and the final "Mob Job", which Zorn turns into a yearning, pained and painful blues, is a stunning conclusion." Rounder Records is pleased to announce the release of Ruby's Torch, a new album by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and "folkabilly" artist Nanci Griffith. Ruby's Torch is a collection of intimate torch songs, some penned by Griffith, others by some of her musical heroes. "Recording an entire record of torch songs has been a dream come true for me," says Griffith, "and something my listeners have been asking me to do for many years."

Rather than relying on tried-and-true torch standards, she pays homage to an eclectic array of influences. "When I Dream" has been performed by Crystal Gayle and Willie Nelson, and represents country balladry at its most powerful. Griffith also tips her hat to Jimmy Webb, whose masterful songwriting is at its peak in the touching "If These Walls Could Speak." This musical spin-off of the animated television series retained the same skewed-life humor that made the show a hit and tried to instigate a dance craze ("Do the Bartman"). Not really a comedy album, though it certainly contains funny moments ("Look at All Those Idiots," "Deep Deep Trouble"). Despite its smart-ass front, it sneaks in some subversive musical education, too: no album that includes Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child," Randy Newman's "I Love to See You Smile" and a parody of King Curtis's "Memphis Soul Stew" (redone as "Springfield Soul Stew") can be all bad.

Following up the release of 1990's THE SIMPSONS SING THE BLUES, those crazy cartoon characters from the hit TV show return with a family-fun album called THE YELLOW ALBUM. The wacky collection of toon tunes is sung mostly by the characters, but there are also some heavy guest appearances. "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves," a cover of the Eurythmics' song, features sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart along with Lisa Simpson, while "Funny How Time Slips Away" finds Homer crooning a duet with Linda Ronstadt. The album has varied production styles including dance and rap music courtesy of Robert Clivilles and David Cole ("Love?," "I Just Can't Help Myself") and funk from the legendary George Clinton ("She's Comin' Out Swingin'"). The aforementioned family fun is the overall theme here, and THE YELLOW ALBUM achieves its goal without ever getting corny. The 22 tracks on Retrospective deftly chronicle the best years of the Animals, who were far and away the grittiest band in the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. Eric Burdon's magnificently raw vocals and the stabbing chords of Alan Price's Vox Continental organ gave their covers of American blues and R&B classic such as Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" an authenticity that no other British groups could match. Their rough sound also gave songs like
"Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Got to Get of This Place" a real sense of rage and menace. By 1967 Burdon was the only remaining original member and he formed a new band that eschewed the blues and R&B of his early years in Newcastle in favor of a psychedelic, San Francisco-influenced sound. Songs like "When I Was Young" showed he had a real gift for the type of personal songwriting that was becoming popular in the late 1960s while the lyrically obscure
"San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot" suggested he spent too much time hanging out with hippies. Even when they stumbled, the Animals were interesting, and when they hit the mark, they were as good as any band from the British Invasion.

Much denser than before, Solid Air was to reveal a new twist in Martyn's musical style. Slurring his words even more, songs like the title cut fairly ooze from the shadows, and the jazzy inclinations keep the listener spellbound. A cover of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil" found Martyn using an Echoplex delay effect, which gave his guitar work an otherworldly feel. "May You Never" is a great folk tale familiar to those who own Eric Clapton's Slowhand — herein lies the original from the writer himself. Excellent!

The Chicago, IL-based Rhymefest first gained national attention
as the co-songwriter of Kanye West's Grammy-winning "Jesus Walks."
His association with West actually went back several years prior;
the MC's independently released Raw Dawg, issued in 2001, was
produced entirely by a pre-fame West. Later signed to Mark Ronson's
J-distributed Allido label, Rhymefest put together Blue Collar for
a March 2006 release date. Its first single, "Brand New," also
featured production work from West, as well as extensive assistance

       While most of the players in the jazz-rap movement never          ÛÛ°
       quite escaped the pasted-on qualities of their vintage            ÛÛ
       samples, with The Low End Theory, A Tribe Called Quest            ÛÛ
       created one of the closest and most brilliant fusions of          ÛÛ
       jazz atmosphere and hip-hop attitude ever recorded. The           ÛÛ
       rapping by Q-Tip and Phife Dawg could be the smoothest of         ÛÛ
       any rap record ever heard; the pair are so in tune with each      ÛÛ
       other, they sound like flip sides of the same personality,        ÛÛ
       fluidly trading off on rhymes, with the former earning his        ÛÛ
       nickname (the Abstract) and Phife concerning himself with         ÛÛ
       the more concrete issues of being young, gifted, and black.       ÛÛ
       The trio also takes on the rap game with a pair of                ÛÛ
       hard-hitting tracks: "Rap Promoter" and "Show Business," the      ÛÛ
       latter a lyrical soundclash with Q-Tip and Phife plus Brand       ÛÛ
       Nubian's Diamond D, Lord Jamar, and Sadat X. The woman            ÛÛ
       problem gets investigated on two realistic yet sensitive          ÛÛ
       tracks, "Butter" and "The Infamous Date Rape." The                ÛÛ
       productions behind these tracks aren't quite skeletal, but        ÛÛ
       they're certainly not complex. Instead, Tribe weaves little       ÛÛ
       more than a stand-up bass (sampled or otherwise) and crisp,       ÛÛ
       live-sounding drum programs with a few deftly placed samples      ÛÛ
       or electric keyboards. It's a tribute to their unerring           ÛÛ
       production sense that, with just those few tools, Tribe           ÛÛ
       produced one of the best hip-hop albums in history, a record      ÛÛ
       that sounds better with each listen. The Low End Theory is        ÛÛ
       an unqualified success, the perfect marriage of intelligent,      ÛÛ
       flowing raps to nuanced, groove-centered productions.
