Typical of his cheeky humour and bubbling good spirits (Hamhock And Lima Beans, Let Me In, I'm Drunk, Phone Calf), it nevertheless reveals the natural sadness of the blues, never far from the surface in any of his work (Who Do You Love ?, Let's Try Over Again). Indeed, Jack's personal life weighed more heavily in his songs than, because of the fun aspect, is generally realised. At this time, just recently divorced and separated from his young ren, he was a lonely man, and destined to remain so. Like all blues singers of his time, Jack also loved the occasional wallow in sentimentality. When I was due to visit him in Sweden in the summer of 1989 - where he was convalescing after drastic surg! ery - he made a particular point of asking me to bring him a cassette copy of a side he had recorded in Paris in January 1977. When I got there, he played it all week long, almost non-stop. It was-his Real Combination For Love. Knowing that he liked it so much, why not now listen to it with him ?                     Fascinated by the innovative blend of Country, Rock and 
                    Blues, Lovett can pride himself in having given an edge 
                    and soul back to Country Music. Featuring 13 tracks from 
                    a soundstage performance.
 
                    The genre-hopping work of Lyle Lovett has seen him 
                    blossom from a country-based singer/songwriter, to an 
                    assured artist unafraid to take on numerous different 
                    styles. His country roots are partly explained by this 
                    Texas upbringing, but he soon branched out and enjoyed 
                    huge crossover success with his subtle blending of ideas 
                    from folk, jazz and rock backgrounds. This spectacular 
                    live show sees him performing with the backing of a 26 
                    piece orchestra, and a 16 piece band. The material mainly 
                    focuses on his album from 2003, "Smile," which was a 
                    collection of cover versions of music from American films. 
                    Legendary singer/songwriter Randy Newman joins Lovett to 
                    duet on several songs, and he also sticks around to 
                    perform a couple of solo turns in Lyle's absence. 
                    Trumpeter Mark Ishman is the other notable guest, ably 
                    helping to bring the show to a beautiful close as Lovett 
                    shows off his eclectic tastes by working his way through 
                    a number of gospel classics.
