Much denser than before, Solid Air was to reveal a new twist in Martyn's musical style. Slurring his words even more, songs like the title cut fairly ooze from the shadows, and the jazzy inclinations keep the listener spellbound. A cover of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil" found Martyn using an Echoplex delay effect, which gave his guitar work an otherworldly feel. "May You Never" is a great folk tale familiar to those who own Eric Clapton's Slowhand — herein lies the original from the writer himself. Excellent!

Release Notes:
The Chicago, IL-based Rhymefest first gained national attention
as the co-songwriter of Kanye West's Grammy-winning "Jesus Walks."
His association with West actually went back several years prior;
the MC's independently released Raw Dawg, issued in 2001, was
produced entirely by a pre-fame West. Later signed to Mark Ronson's
J-distributed Allido label, Rhymefest put together Blue Collar for
a March 2006 release date. Its first single, "Brand New," also
featured production work from West, as well as extensive assistance
from No I.D. (Common, G-Unit).

While most of the players in the jazz-rap movement never ÛÛ°
quite escaped the pasted-on qualities of their vintage ÛÛ
samples, with The Low End Theory, A Tribe Called Quest ÛÛ
created one of the closest and most brilliant fusions of ÛÛ
jazz atmosphere and hip-hop attitude ever recorded. The ÛÛ
rapping by Q-Tip and Phife Dawg could be the smoothest of ÛÛ
any rap record ever heard; the pair are so in tune with each ÛÛ
other, they sound like flip sides of the same personality, ÛÛ
fluidly trading off on rhymes, with the former earning his ÛÛ
nickname (the Abstract) and Phife concerning himself with ÛÛ
the more concrete issues of being young, gifted, and black. ÛÛ
The trio also takes on the rap game with a pair of ÛÛ
hard-hitting tracks: "Rap Promoter" and "Show Business," the ÛÛ
latter a lyrical soundclash with Q-Tip and Phife plus Brand ÛÛ
Nubian's Diamond D, Lord Jamar, and Sadat X. The woman ÛÛ
problem gets investigated on two realistic yet sensitive ÛÛ
tracks, "Butter" and "The Infamous Date Rape." The ÛÛ
productions behind these tracks aren't quite skeletal, but ÛÛ
they're certainly not complex. Instead, Tribe weaves little ÛÛ
more than a stand-up bass (sampled or otherwise) and crisp, ÛÛ
live-sounding drum programs with a few deftly placed samples ÛÛ
or electric keyboards. It's a tribute to their unerring ÛÛ
production sense that, with just those few tools, Tribe ÛÛ
produced one of the best hip-hop albums in history, a record ÛÛ
that sounds better with each listen. The Low End Theory is ÛÛ
an unqualified success, the perfect marriage of intelligent, ÛÛ
flowing raps to nuanced, groove-centered productions.
